The current crop of Ultrabooks certainly aren’t bad value for money, but they haven’t quite made the splash that Intel and partners were hoping for. Maybe that will change with the upcoming release of the mobile Ivy Bridge chipsets. Samsung has updated the listing for its Series 9 Ultrabook to show that an Ivy Bridge version is coming. They did leave out the crucial detail of when, though.

Intel has started shipping the long-awaited Ivy-Bridge processors to manufacturers while retailers will begin receiving the processors later this week.
Intel officially announced 14 different i5 and i7 processors all freaturing their new 22nm chip architecture compared to the last generations 32nm architecture. The smaller architecture means faster clock speeds and lower power consumption, which is incredibly beneficial to mobile users.

An aggressive ramp of Ivy Bridge and Romley has hit Intel with a decline in profit, even if the company's revenue slightly increased from $12.8 to $12.9 billion. Net earnings were down from $3.2 to $2.7 billion or the quarter.

While ARM-based processors have dominated the mobile market, Intel plans to change all that, possibly as soon as this week. During Intel’s financial results call this afternoon, that we reported on here, CEO Paul Otellini told investors Intel’s first Medfield phone will launch by the end of the week.

During the Intel Developer Forum yesterday, the company predicted that pixel-dense displays will become mainstream by 2013 in devices ranging from smartphones to desktop computers. Intel’s VP and GM of the PC Client Group Kirk Skaugen also revealed that upcoming Ivy Bridge chips are built for Retina display computers, pretty much confirming rumors that next-gen Macs will indeed feature the high-resolution screen.

Intel is now shipping the second-generation Thunderbolt controllers coming just in time for new breed of Mac computers and other offerings. While the CPUs won’t be available to purchase for another three weeks, Anandtech has had some hands-on time detailing the improvements and new features of the Ivy Bridge chipset on various motherboards. If you’re looking for performance reviews, you’ll have to hold on a little longer, but there are some interesting tidbits to note from the chipset.
