A new Apple patent has surfaced that hints iOS may be getting a facial recognition security update. The patent is titled “3-D Object Recognition” and is said to describe a new way to generate 3-D facial models using 2-D images. The patent was originally filed by a firm called Polar Rose from Sweden that Apple purchased in 2010.

If you’ve played Halo, Modern Warfare or Team Fortress in the last week, take a moment to thank id Software. Twenty years ago last Saturday they published Wolfenstein 3D, forever placing a mark on first-person shooter gaming and giving a whole new generation good reason to hate Nazis. Bethesda Softworks, id’s current owner and publisher, is celebrating by making the iOS game free for today (Wednesday) only, and publishing a free browser-based version for everyone.

Apple’s new iOS 5.1.1 may only have been available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users for a few hours, but already there’s a jailbreak solution for installing unofficial apps, as long as you have the right device. The iPhone Dev Team’s MuscleNerd has confirmed that those with devices not based on the Apple A5 chipset – which means the iPad 2 and new iPad, as long as the iPhone 4S – can use the previously released redsn0w jailbreaking tool.

A new study has found that while mobile gaming has seen sharp increases across the board, there is no doubt who the winner is when it comes to how much customers are actually spending on their mobile game experiences. The average iPhone/iPad gamer is spending about five times more money on their mobile games than the average Android gamer. That is the result found from research firm Newzoo, which looked at actual data from iOS and Android downloads as well as 17,000 survey respondants.

There's been rampant speculation that Apple's secretly working on its own television, often referred to as iTV, for quite some time. One thing the rumors and speculation hasn't provided is a probable release date. Some analysts have predicted a release date as early as later this year, but at least one analyst isn't so sure we'll see an Apple-branded television that soon.

Grand Theft Auto III made the leap to Android and iOS devices back in December, offering the same classic game but adapted for touchscreens. It was good value too at $5. Now, developer Rockstar has revealed that a port of Max Payne is coming to iOS devices on April 12th, and Android devices on April 26th. The game shall be called Max Payne Mobile.

Horace Dediu of Asymco has pointed out something very interesting regarding Google’s smartphone revenue per year. While the tech giant’s smartphone revenue is on the rise, which appears to be good news for Android (on the surface), a closer look at the source of the revenue shows otherwise. It turns out that most of the increase in Google’s smartphone revenue is from the iOS platform. Deidu suggests that revenue per device from the Android platform is actually on a slight decline.

Meanwhile, only 32% of Android devices connect to WiFi networks, with the remaining 68% only connecting to the mobile data network.

Microsoft knows that it is entering the tablet market late and because of that it needs to help developers migrate from existing platforms to their own. The natural target for this would be iOS as that segment has the largest market share and the developer community that Microsoft hopes to tap.
